Check Internet Positif before you buy a .id domain.

We bought a new .id domain for our point of sale. It was already on Indonesia's blocklist. Here's the two-minute check that would have saved us.

In May 2026 we bought a short, clean .id domain for our point of sale, which later launched as Rubicon. We set it up and opened it on an ordinary Indonesian connection.

It didn't load. The browser landed on internetpositif.id, the page Indonesian internet providers show for blocked sites. The domain was brand new to us. It was already blocked.

A new domain can carry an old block.

Komdigi, the communications ministry, keeps a blocklist called TRUST+ Positif. Internet providers in Indonesia have to enforce it.

A domain that's new to you isn't always new. Short, memorable names expire and get resold, and some once hosted gambling or other blocked content. The block outlives the old owner. Nobody tells the next buyer.

Changing DNS won't get you around it.

Switching the office's DNS to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 changed nothing. The providers we tested, including IndiHome and Biznet, intercept ordinary DNS traffic and rewrite the answer for blocked domains, whichever server you ask.

Changing the DNS server doesn’t help: the provider rewrites the answer for a blocked domain.

You may still reach your site through an encrypted connection such as Cloudflare WARP. Your customers on ordinary home or mobile internet won't. For a business, that site doesn't exist in Indonesia.

The check takes two minutes.

Before you pay for a .id domain, especially a short or second-hand one:

  1. Search for it at trustpositif.komdigi.go.id. "Ada" means it's on the list. Walk away unless you're ready for the unblocking process below.
  2. Check its history on the Wayback Machine. If it once hosted a casino, a betting site or anything you wouldn't put your name to, assume the list noticed.
  3. After you buy, open it on an ordinary Indonesian connection, like a phone on mobile data, not only your own setup.

The two-minute check, before anyone pays.

Check before anyone pays.

Our point of sale launched under another name, Rubicon, at joinrubicon.id. The lesson: check the blocklist before anything is paid for, for our own products and for clients. It takes two minutes. A launch day when nobody in the country can open your site costs far more.
